In June, Alfonso Rizo-Patrón, author of the Peruvía Plan while Minister of State between 1959 and 1960, financed an expedition to the main tributary of the Cutivireni River, the Mayoventi river. The objective of Mr. Rizo-Patrón was to obtain samples of the zone of the Lake apparently formed in 1947 as a result of a great earthquake that caused an enormous landslide that dammed the river. Mr. Rizo-Patrón had made macro-geologic studies on the zone having developed the theory of the possible existence of an important deposit of petroleum. The samples from the expedition were analyzed in the laboratory of the Institute of Geology and Mining (INGEMMET) with results that in opinion of Mr. Rizo-Patrón eliminate the possibility of the existence of petroleum in that zone. Happily, the expedition gave excellent fruits in the other objective planned by the company SEANTEC: to obtain abundant photographic material of the landscapes of the zone including part of the Cutivireni river (up to the confluence of the Mayoventi river) and the gorge of the Mayoventi river up to the lake. Until now photographs taken from land did not exist of this lake and the landslide that caused it. The photos obtained by Joel Rivera and Gerónimo Vílchez have been really spectacular. Surprising is the beauty of the Mayoventi gorge and its spectacular cascades. Of the 500 photos that they obtained we are reproducing some here, and gradually we will be increasing this section, including composed panoramic photos, as for example that of the Parijaro waterfall that was a resting and refreshment location in the return from the exhausting trip. |
