La carretera
central es actualmente la principal vía de acceso a la importante región de la selva
central, que incluye las provincias orientales (Chanchamayo y Satipo) del
Departamento de Junín, así como las provincias de Oxapampa y Pasco del
Departamento de Pasco. Notables son las profundas quebradas y
precipicios en todo el trayecto, así como las lagunas en la parte alta entre San Mateo y
La Oroya.
San Mateo es un pueblo acogedor (3000 msnm) que queda en la carretera central del
Perú, a mitad de camino entre Lima y
Tarma.
La Oroya es un pueblo fundado alrededor del gran centro metalúrgico que
trata principalmente los minerales de Cerro de Pasco.

The main highway is at the moment the main
access road to the important region of the central forest, that
includes the Eastern provinces (Chanchamayo and Satipo) of the
Department of Junín, as well as the provinces of Oxapampa and Pasco of
the Department of Pasco. Notable are the deep gorges and cliffs
throughout the highway, as well as the high altitude lakes between San
Mateo and the town of La Oroya.
San Mateo is a nice little town (altitude 9840 feet) that is in the main highway of Peru, half way
between Lima and Tarma. La Oroya
is a town created around a great metallurgical center that processes
mainly the ores coming from the Cerro de Pasco mine.
