Las ruinas
preincaicas de Kuélap se encuentran a unos 20 Km al sur de Chachapoyas, capital del departamento de Amazonas en el norte del Perú.
Kuélap es una de las construcciones preincaicas más importantes del
Perú, de unos 600 metros de largo y 100 metros de ancho en promedio.
Sus muros llegan hasta 20 metros de alto. Fue construida en lo alto de
una montaña cuyo flanco occidental es un precipicio imponente. Fue obra
del pueblo de los Chachapoyas, que abarcaron un gran territorio incluyendo
el departamento de San Martín. Se cree que Kuelap fue conquistado
por los Incas y abandonado antes de la llegada de los españoles al Perú.

The pre-inca ruins of Kuelap are located about 20 km south of Chachapoyas, capital of the department of Amazonas in the north of Peru. Kuélap is one of the more important pre-inca constructions of Peru, about 600 meters in length and 100 meters wide in average. Their walls are up to 60 feet high. It was built at the top of a mountain whose western flank is an imposing precipice. It was the work of the
Chachapoyas, or "Cloud People" whose great territory extended to the department of San
Martín. It is believed that Kuelap was conquered by the Incas and
abandoned before
the arrival of the spaniards to Perú.
